⚡Cursor Setup Guide

Connect SonicAura MCP to Cursor

Add SonicAura's audio tools to Cursor's Agent mode. Once connected, you can ask Cursor to split stems, remove vocals, or denoise audio without leaving your editor.

⏱ ~3 min setup🔐 OAuth 2.1 via mcp-remote✅ Agent mode required

Before you start

  • • Cursor 0.45 or newer
  • • Node.js 18+ installed locally (node -v to check)
  • • A SonicAura account with at least 1 credit

Step-by-step setup

1

Install Cursor

Download and install the latest version of Cursor from cursor.com/download. Cursor 0.45 or newer is required for MCP support.

2

Open the MCP config file

Cursor reads MCP servers from a JSON config file. Open the file below in your editor. If it does not exist, create it.

Global (recommended)
~/.cursor/mcp.json
Project-scoped (optional)
.cursor/mcp.json (project-scoped, optional)
3

Paste the SonicAura config

Cursor needs the mcp-remote bridge for remote HTTP OAuth servers. Copy the JSON below into the file.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "sonicaura": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-remote",
        "https://api.sonicaurastudio.com/mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

No API key needed here — Cursor will handle OAuth automatically when you first call a tool.

4

Restart Cursor

Fully quit Cursor (Cmd+Q on Mac, or File → Exit on Windows), then reopen it. Cursor will start the mcp-remote bridge automatically.

5

Authorize & verify

Open Cursor Chat and switch to Agent mode. Ask it to check SonicAura status. On first use, Cursor opens your browser for OAuth authorization — sign in and click Authorize. Then return to Cursor.

Verify the connection

Open Cursor Chat (Cmd/Ctrl + L), switch to Agent mode, then type:

Check SonicAura service status for me.

Cursor should call check_service_status and reply with your available credits. On the first call, your browser will open for OAuth authorization.

Available tools

check_service_status

Check if the service is ready and how many credits you have.

get_my_credits

Query your remaining separation credits.

get_upload_url

Get a presigned URL to upload large audio files.

upload_audio

Upload small audio files (<1MB) via base64.

submit_separation

Submit a stem separation task (2/4/6 tracks).

check_separation_status

Check task progress and download the separated stems.

Troubleshooting

Why does Cursor need "npx mcp-remote" instead of a plain URL?

Cursor's built-in remote MCP support is still evolving. The "mcp-remote" bridge runs a tiny local proxy that handles OAuth discovery, token storage, and HTTP transport, which makes remote OAuth servers work reliably inside Cursor.

The tools show "0 tools enabled" after restarting.

This usually means the mcp-remote bridge failed to reach the server. Check that Node.js 18+ is installed (run "node -v"), that "npx" is on your PATH, and that your network can reach api.sonicaurastudio.com.

A browser tab opens but the authorization seems stuck.

Complete the sign-in in your browser. Once authorized, the tab shows "Authorization successful" and you can close it. Then go back to Cursor and retry the tool call.

Where are the Cursor MCP logs?

On macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Cursor/logs/. On Windows: %APPDATA%\Cursor\logs. Search for "MCPService" to find the exact error.
