How to Use the Online Metronome

A metronome only helps if it stays out of your way. Set a tempo, choose how many beats are in a bar, and start playing — the accent falls on the first beat so you always know where the bar begins.

  1. 1

    Set your tempo

Drag the speed slider anywhere between 40 and 240 BPM. The current tempo is shown in large type above the counter.

  2. 2

    Choose a time signature

Pick 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 or 6/4 to match the piece you are working on. The first beat of every bar is accented with a higher click so you can hear where you are.

  3. 3

    Start the beat

Press Start Beat and the visual counter animates in time with the audio, so you can practise reading a pulse as well as hearing one.

  4. 4

    Adjust while you play

Tempo and time signature can both be changed without stopping, which is useful when you are slowly building a passage up to speed.

Precision Metronome Frequently Asked Questions

What tempo range does it cover?

40 to 240 BPM, which spans everything from a slow ballad to a fast bebop head.

Which time signatures are available?

2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 6/4. The first beat of each bar is accented with a higher-pitched click.

Can I use it for odd time signatures?

Not currently. The counter supports up to six beats per bar, so 5/4 and 7/8 are not covered.

Does it keep working if my connection drops?

Yes. Once the page has loaded the click is generated in your browser, so the tempo will not stutter or stop.
