How To Use the Sound Metainfo Tool
Upload any audio file and instantly inspect its real format, codec, sample rate, bit depth, duration, channels and bit rate. The specification grid fills in automatically, and you can edit missing tags and repackage a clean copy β all inside your browser, with nothing ever uploaded to a server.
- 1
Upload your audio file
Drag and drop an audio file, or click the upload area. MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AIFF and Opus are all supported. The file is parsed locally in your browser, so it never leaves your device.
- 2
Inspect the specification grid
Every detected property fills in its matching format row β container, codec, sample rate, bit depth, duration, channels, bit rate and tag status. Detection is content-based, not name-based: if a fileβs real container differs from its extension, the grid shows the truth.
- 3
Edit missing metadata tags
Enter track details such as Title, Artist, Album, Year and Genre in the tag editor. The Repackage & Export button becomes available as soon as an audio file is loaded.
- 4
Repackage and export a clean file
Click Repackage & Export File to save a copy with your tags written in. The metadata container is rebuilt without re-encoding the audio stream, so the original quality is preserved.
Audio Metainfo Checker Frequently Asked Questions
What audio file formats does this tool support?
MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AIFF and Opus are inspected directly, and any other format falls into the OTHER row of the grid. Analysis runs entirely in your browser, so no file is ever uploaded.
Are my audio files uploaded to a server?
No. Parsing, tag editing and repackaging all run locally inside your browser using pure JavaScript. Your audio files and any tags you edit never leave your device.
Why does the detected format differ from my file's extension?
The tool identifies the format by reading the fileβs content (magic bytes), not by trusting the extension. A file renamed to .mp3 that actually contains M4A audio will be shown as MPEG-4/AAC in the grid.
What is the difference between sample rate and bit depth?
Sample rate is how many times per second the audio is measured (44.1 kHz is CD standard). Bit depth is how precisely each measurement is stored (16-bit vs 24-bit). Higher values mean better fidelity and larger files.
Why is the bit rate not equal to file size divided by duration?
Lossy formats like MP3 and M4A often use variable bit rate (VBR). The bit rate shown in the grid is the average across the whole file, so duration Γ bit rate may differ from the actual file size.
Does repackaging change the audio quality?
No. Tag editing rewrites only the metadata container around the audio stream β the stream itself is not re-encoded, so playback quality stays identical to the original file.
